‘Swimming Upstream’ in the Sports Nutrition World

By Wendy Moore

This past summer I was a participant in the annual Ottawa Easter Seals fundraiser: Bring on the Bay. There were over 800 swimmers who swam on July 13 from the Nepean Sailing Club to the Britannia Yacht Club. There was a 1.5 km swim and a 3 km swim.
It was my first time swimming in this event, and I swam the 3 km distance. I proudly placed 3rd in my age group. A regular Master’s swimmer with the Ottawa swim team, Technosport, I had competed in swim meets, Nationals and Provincials, but not in an open water event like this one.
What was unique for me was that I swam this event in 1:05 without traditional fuelling of carb loading. On the contrary, I had fasted 18 hours and was on a keto/carnivore (minimal carbs) food plan. Two months ago, I competed in the 3-day Canadian National Masters Swimming competition in Montreal and had some of my best swim times for my events. I’m sure that I was the only one on deck of thousands of swimmers fuelling with water and ground beef and not carbs.
Up until 5 years ago, I had been a fully active triathlete and half-marathon runner, and I was a traditional ‘carb loader’ athlete. But a massive blood clot which should have killed me turned my life and my diet upside down.

The night before my clot, I did an easy 10 K run with no swelling symptoms. Only 4 hours before I was to board a flight to Ireland for a 32-show musical tour, a massive blood clot from my ankle up through my abdomen literally brought to my knees. Had I boarded that plane, it likely would have been game over for me. A few angels got their wings that night I’m sure… and I’m eternally grateful. It was a dramatic way to discover that I have a hereditary blood clotting disorder.

Doctors told me that my mobility would be severely limited after that life-changing clot. Never one to give up hope, while I was couch-bound, I did a lot of reading on reducing inflammation (my left leg was almost twice the size of my right). It seemed that minimizing sugar and carbs was a big recommendation. By then I had also gained an extra 20 pounds from being more sedentary (and indulging in carb-loaded foods). This is how my journey into the world of low-carb keto began.
The keto diet and various fasting durations brought me success! Now, 5 years later, I am at my ideal target body weight and my leg inflammation is gone. I am fully active in swimming, cycling, yoga, strength training and even some running.
I’ve decided to retire from major music touring and to focus on my continued passion for living a keto/fasting lifestyle and to helping others achieve success with their goals, weight loss, and major health benefits of living a keto lifestyle. It is my desire to help others write a health success story such as mine.

Kingston Keto Retreat Wrap

Hi Everyone!

Our Kingston Keto Retreat was a big success! We had a lot of great information shared from our four fabulous speakers. We had some great exhibitors that also shared some great information. And people who attended reported that their time was well spent, they learned a lot, and were inspired.

I’ve included some pictures below so you can get a sense of what it was like.

I’ll definitely be planning more Keto Retreats for the new year, and we’ll announce the dates, locations, and speaker line-ups as those details get set.

For now, I just want to thank you all for putting up with multiple emails per week from me in the run up to the event. We are going to take a break from emails for a while, but rest assured that we are busy behind the scenes.

Thanks again to our great speakers: Megan Ramos, Amy Berger, Dr. Doug Bishop, and Tiia Bishop and to my wonderful volunteers who helped to make this event such a success.

Here’s a link to a video that Arthur and I recorded and posted on Facebook. Enjoy!

All the best,

Do You Need Help Getting Started On Keto Or LCHF?

Hi Everyone!

At the Kingston Keto Retreat on December 1, 2018, there is going to be a lot of information presented from our 4 guest speakers. If you have been following the Keto/LCHF way of eating for a while, you will have an opportunity to dive deep into some of the science that supports us in regaining our health and staying healthy. I wanted to emphasize, however, that there will also be lots of information provided that will be beneficial for someone who is new to Keto, or is thinking about trying it.

If you are just getting started in following a ketogenic diet, or you are considering reducing your carbs, or you want to try intermittent fasting but aren’t sure where to start, we will be providing all of this information and more at the Kingston Keto Retreat. If you have been “doing Keto” for a while, then you almost certainly have friends and family that have seen your success and would be interested in learning more. The Kingston Keto Retreat is for all of you!

I anticipate that you and your friends and family will all benefit from the information our speakers will provide. And you’ll be surrounded by others that are just starting out as well as more seasoned Keto eaters who can share their own experiences about getting started.

We have some plans for helping everyone enjoy themselves at the Kingston Keto Retreat that won’t be revealed until you arrive. I hope you will join us in Kingston on December 1! Click here to register.

Regards,

Wendy

The Keto Box Lunch Menu Has Been Posted!

Our Keto Retreat schedule for Saturday, December 1st, is packed with 4 great Speakers! In order to maximize our time with the Speakers, we’ve only allocated 45 minutes for lunch so you are encouraged to bring your own or pre-purchase one of our Keto Box Lunches. The Box Lunch Menu is available here.

If you have already registered without the Box Lunch and would like to add it, just email me for instructions on how to do that. I am only going to order the amount of lunches that are pre-paid. There will not be the option to buy your box lunch at the conference. There is a small restaurant at the Ambassdor that has some Keto options. Reservations are recommended if you want to go there for lunch.

There are several food options close to the hotel if you have a car that you could easily get to if you want to leave the hotel at lunch or any other time:

  • Tim Horton’s: 3 minutes west
  • Starbucks: 3 minutes west
  • Subway: 4 minutes west
  • McDonald’s: 5 minutes west
  • Loblaws: 8 minutes west
  • Food Basics: 3 minutes east

We are also planning to create some informal discussion groups during lunch. For example, if you want to discuss Fasting with other conference attendees at lunch time, we will designate an area where you can gather to do that. These are totally optional and there will also be spaces with no discussion if you prefer to eat your lunch without discussion. Some topics we are considering:

  • Fasting
  • Keto & Vegetarian/Vegan Diets
  • Keto Baking
  • Keto for Health

If you have a topic suggestion, or if you would like to vote on a particular topic, you can do that on our Facebook page.

I am grateful for all the shares, likes, and comments we’ve received so far. Seeing other people succeed with this way of eating is why I organized this retreat. Your help in continuing to spread the word is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Wendy
